The ongoing uncertainty around oil prices and the increasingly restrained regulatory environment have changed how shale operators across the region approach their produced water management decisions. As production gains momentum, the hydraulic fracturing wastewater treatment market is set to grow over the next decade.

New research shows more emphasis is placed on water protection through upcoming regulations and public efforts to influence the sourcing and disposal of produced water for hydraulic fracturing. Regulations will increasingly favor the treatment, recycling, and reuse of flowback and produced water, particularly in the Permian region, gradually replacing deep-well injection due to the anticipated regulatory pressures and large shale gas reserves. The treatment of flowback and produced water can be achieved through various technologies, including advanced oxidation, membrane filtration, and reverse osmosis, which all have proven results.

As this market evolves, increasing importance is placed on new modular treatment systems over more centralized treatment technologies. This conference will compare the economics of treating produced water for recycling and reuse versus the total cost of water disposal while looking at the actual volumes of water recovered from wells, the cost of water transfer, and the proximity to disposal wells.
